Foreign Language Requirement

All Carroll School of Management students must satisfy a foreign language requirement.  There are many routes to this goal:

Students wishing to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than those listed above and those for whom English is not their first language, should consult the Associate Dean.

Pre-matriculation test
  • A score of 3 or better on the AP exam for modern languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish) or 4 or 5 on the AP exam for classical languages (Greek or Latin)
  • A score of 550 or better on the SAT II for the modern languages and 600 or better for the classical languages

Secondary school language study

  • Completion of a total of four years of foreign language study. A student might combine years of different languages
  • Completion of level four of a foreign language

Demonstrated proficiency (second language)

  • Native fluency—reading, writing, speaking—in a language other than English

University study

  • Two options: completion of a year of intermediate language OR completion of a year of introductory language in a language different from that studied in high school.

Language courses will count as the required electives from the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. Students with documented learning disabilities may be exempt from the foreign language requirement and should consult with the Associate Dean. Fulfillment of the proficiency requirement by the examinations listed above does not confer course credit.
