The MBA Consulting Project

During the second semester of the full-time MBA program, after intense study in the core management disciplines, students exercise their new skills by providing management consulting services to external clients. This intensive, team-based project is a hallmark of the Boston College MBA program. Past clients have included start-ups and small businesses, major multi-national corporations, not-for-profits, international firms, and government agencies.

The student teams consist of 5 or 6 students specifically brought together for their complimentary skills. Each team is responsible for improving the client organization through analyzing a significant challenge or opportunity and delivering practical solutions that meet their client's needs. In the past, these deliverables have included:

  • Devising a strategy for the introduction of a new product or service
  • Identifying potential acquisition candidates
  • Creating and installing a new business process
  • Evaluating large-scale operational practices
  • Developing a business plan for expanding overseas production capacity.

All MBA Consulting Project teams present their work to the faculty in the prestigious Diane Weiss Consulting Competition, the exciting capstone experience of a demanding year of applied learning and professional growth.

   Consulting Services for International Companies

International Consulting

A course designed for students who may at some point be interested in pursuing careers in international consulting, this program provides research and delivery of recommendations to an international company.

The consulting team will feature dual enrollment by students from BC's Law School as well as students from the MBA program. The varied curriculums and perspectives provided by the two programs created a team with an interesting perspective and dynamic.

The project research is completed in the US during the fall semester through libraries, databases, interviews and international communications via phone, fax and email. After concluding their research and analysis, students will fly to the client site and deliver their recommendations personally to the client at their offices.

Directed Studies

Clients and students can propose consulting studies or projects ranging from 1 - 3 credits at any time. A faculty supervisor must supervise all work and permission of the department is required for registration. Given the unique nature of these projects by definition, the course is not constrained by the traditional semester-base calendar. Work can commence in the midst of a semester and extend into another.
