Welcome

I am happy to invite you to apply to the PhD Finance Program at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. In recent years, finance has become a discipline which requires a high level of training and creativity. Academic research in finance increasingly makes use of the latest tools and techniques in economics, mathematical analysis, and related disciplines, in addition to various concepts in finance. I am therefore happy to welcome students with interest and aptitude for these disciplines as well as for finance itself to apply to our PhD Program.

I particularly encourage students with some previous training in one or more of the above areas to apply, since, based on past experience, we have found that such prior training makes study in our PhD Program especially productive. We offer doctoral students a very supportive faculty which is strongly committed to excellence in research, with a track record of publication in the top finance journals. The faculty here is very accessible to doctoral students, and open to working with doctoral students on various research projects.

Our first-year summer paper requirement encourages students to start thinking about research topics quite early in the Program. Our active Friday research seminars featuring the best researchers from all over the world gives doctoral students exposure to the latest in finance research. Further, our Wednesday Brown Bag seminars provide doctoral students and faculty with a forum to present their own research and get feedback from faculty and student colleagues.

All students get to do some independent teaching in the fourth year of the doctoral Program, allowing them to develop significant teaching skills as well, a feature that has helped our students do well in the academic job market in recent years.
