Paul Pettinato

Paul Pettinato, Evening MBA, '08

Medical decisions and financial decision are inextricably linked. The cost of healthcare rises annually by 12-14% and the majority of healthcare dollars are spent in the last six months of a patient’s life. As a medical practitioner, I am able to control the quality of healthcare I provide to my patients in their daily lives. However, in order to help the greatest number of people benefit from the healthcare system, it’s necessary for me to move into healthcare management where my decisions will influence larger numbers of patients than I currently see in my daily practice of overseeing over 3,000 patients.

During my residency, I was able to see more clearly the economies of patient care by working with the president of the Texas Medical Center, who is also a physician with an MBA degree. The better a medical institution can manage its costs, the more patients can be served. A business degree will equip me with the skills to manage groups of physicians and make solid healthcare management decisions. Enter the BC MBA program.

As an alumna of the program, my father encouraged me to consider BC because he knew first-hand the quality and flexibility it offered. I needed a program that would fit my demanding schedule of being a new father and managing a full-time practice. The school is conveniently located; course scheduling is flexible; and professors are generally always available during the odd hours where I find time to study.

There are other MBA programs that specialize in healthcare, but I didn’t want to sit in a classroom with other doctors. I wanted to learn how people from different industries approach problem solving. I’ve learned just as much from my classmate as I have from my professors.

The health care industry is moving quickly and my goal is to graduate in 2008. I know that while I am at BC, I will continue to receive the ancillary support I need from the faculty, the staff, and my classmates to meet my goals and work to do my part to help shape the future of the health care industry.
