IME
The International Management Experience (IME) provides exceptional exposure to economic activity, market trends, and culture in Asia and Europe. The three-credit elective course, which culminates in a two and a half week trip abroad, is regarded by participants as one of the most rewarding experiences of their MBA education, and has prepared many for international placements.
In preparatory course work, students explore economic, governmental, and social factors that affect the conduct of business in a variety of industries and contexts. During the trips, which typically embark at the end of the spring semester, students and faculty visit new ventures and established small businesses as well as major local companies and multinational corporations. They speak to entrepreneurs and business leaders, tour manufacturing operations, and meet with government officials responsible for trade and investment activity. They observe first-hand the application of management principles and strategies in the global arena. IME trips are enhanced by social and networking events, which may include Boston College alumni who live and work in each country.
The Asia IME generally visits four countries, which have included China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The Europe IME has included France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, as well as emerging market economies in Central and Eastern Europe.
International Consulting and Internships
Students enrolled in the “International Consulting Project” elective conduct and complete the research and analysis for their projects with faculty guidance over the course of the semester, and subsequently present the deliverables to the clients in their respective countries. The “MBA Field Studies Project” offers US-based consulting experience on behalf of a multinational corporation or new venture focused on international market penetration. Both opportunities further skill development begun in the first-year MBA Consulting Project.
For students seeking an international consulting experience but find it difficult to make the commitment to travel overseas, the top-ranked Hult International Business School (partnering with BC) offers an MBA Field Studies Project similar to BC’s “MBA Field Studies Program.”
International internships may be arranged for a select group of students with placements that have included organizations in France, Ireland, and Thailand.
International Dual Degree Programs
University of Strasbourg
MBA students at Boston College can attain a French graduate degree in international management from Strasbourg by spending a semester and a summer (or two) in France studying and working. A key component of the program is the internship opportunity within a multi-national or European company.
