Rochelle Valdez | Aspiring Principal Fellow, Boston Public Schools
After completing her undergraduate studies at Smith College, Rochelle Valdez began her teaching career with Teach for America where she taught ESL and served as the LAT facilitator for the Richard J. Murphy K-8 School. As an ESL teacher she worked with the school administration and district to provide school wide ESL professional development for teachers. She transitioned to the Blackstone School where she continued her teaching career. While teaching at the Blackstone, she developed an interest in human capital and its impact on schools. Rochelle went on to work at the educational non-profit, Building Excellent Schools as the Associate Director of Talent and Recruitment to recruit school leaders. Realizing the impact school leaders and teachers have on closing the achievement gap, she returned to Boston Public Schools as the recruitment manager for the Office of Human Capital. As the recruitment manager she worked closely with school leaders and network superintendents to develop and implement strategies for hiring highly qualified teachers through a rigorous selection process. In January 2014, Rochelle transitioned into the role of Director of Operations at Mildred Avenue School where she has led the development of systems and structures for data inquiry and action planning, behavioral management, and recruitment and selection. She is an active member of the Instructional Leadership Team and was instrumental in the design of high-quality out of school time.
