Mona Ford | Principal, Winship Elementary School
Monakatellia Ford is currently principal of the F. Lyman Winship Elementary School in Brighton, MA, where she is serving a population of 300 young scholars in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Monakatellia is a proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools, where she also began her teaching career. Her passion for education is fueled by her own educational experiences as a student and as a result, her desire to ensure all children reach their infinite potential, have access to rigorous learning opportunities and attain academic success. At the Winship, she is working to create an experiential learning environment where all scholars are encouraged to strive for excellence academically, socially and emotionally in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Previously, Monakatellia served as assistant principal for two years at the Dever-McCormack Middle School in Dorchester, MA where she focused on student and teacher inquiry, meeting the diverse academic and social/emotional needs of students and extended learning time. Prior to this, she was a classroom teacher for ten years within Boston Public Schools. While teaching and leading within traditional, turnaround and pilot settings, she worked to provide all students with high quality educational experiences and opportunities. During her tenure as a teacher, she served in many roles, including Principal Intern, Grade Level Team Leader, New Teacher mentor and Math Facilitator. She also served on the Instructional Leadership Team and played a critical role in supporting the implementation of whole school improvement strategies aimed to increase student achievement. Additionally, she was a member of her school’s Social Justice Task Force where she focused on advocating for practices to create school and classroom communities for equity and social justice. Monakatellia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Temple University, Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Cambridge College and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from Simmons College. In 2013, Monakatellia completed the BPS Aspiring Principals Program. Monakatellia is committed to assuring that all of her young scholars acquire the knowledge and develop the skills and habits that will prepare them to succeed in college, career and life.
