Upon graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle, John Elder moved to Boston for an urban fellowship at Match High School. As a member of Match’s first teacher training program, the Match Teacher Residency, John received his teaching certification and joined Phoenix Charter Academy in 2009 as a humanities teacher. After four years as a U.S. History and Literature teacher, he transitioned to a leadership position at the second Phoenix Academy in Lawrence, Massachusetts. As Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, John has overseen the implementation of interim assessments at the Lawrence campus, standardized curriculum planning across departments and increased cross-campus collaboration. Passionately committed to the art and science of teaching, he teaches an Introduction to Literature class for students entering Phoenix. As he continues to develop as a leader, John remains committed to searching for and developing school- and network-wide systems to ensure alignment and to maximize student achievement. Improving teacher sustainability is a high priority of his, as he believes it is crucial to maintaining stability for staff and student culture and ensuring that students have the best and most experienced teachers. The Phoenix mission continues to be an inspiration for John.
