Jean Larrabee | Principal, West Zone Early Elementary School
Jean Larrabee is a life-long educator who has impacted student lives for over 40 years. Presently, Principal of the West Zone Early Learning Center in Jamaica Plain, she serves children ages 3 to 7, promoting an exceptional, developmentally appropriate learning experience that lays the foundation for academic excellence for every child every day. Jean is passionate about early childhood and preserving the right and need for young children to learn in an environment that encourages self-discovery, exploration, and language development. She has implemented an Environmental Science program bringing children and families into the natural world creating first hand learning opportunities. This has resulted in greater oral and written language output, and intellectual development. She has aided her teachers strengthen their teaching of literacy by encouraging the use of developmentally appropriate practice during a time of increased pressure to focus on the acquisition of academic skills, by providing specialized training in literacy development.
Jean brings to the Principalship a long history of classroom experience. She has been a Boston Public School educator since 1986 serving a multitude of students, writing Grants, mentoring and leading teachers and creating programming to enhance social and academic growth. She was called to her present position as a Leader in the Early Childhood field to enhance the growing need for high quality Early Childhood programming. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Fitchburg State, a Master’s in Early Childhood Education from the University of Massachusetts and is a National Board Certified Early Childhood Generalist.
