Jonathan Diamond | Dean of Students, Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter School
Jonathan Diamond is an educator whose focus is on developing and sustaining high-performing, inclusive environments for students from diverse backgrounds. Jonathan currently serves as the high school Dean of Students at the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School and he has been instrumental in moving the school’s culture from a zero tolerance, “No Excuses” model to one where teachers, students, and families collaborate to maximize instructional time while maintaining high expectations for behavior. By choosing to invest in people and policies that promote success over compliance, the external suspension rate for students during Jonathan’s tenure has dropped from 40% to 4% and the school continues to rank among the highest in the state for 10th grade MCAS scores and college matriculation and retention rates.
Jonathan is currently working on a number of projects aimed at improving equity for underserved populations. He leads a high school men’s group aimed at addressing multiple layers of the achievement gap, he is a co-leader/founder of the Academy’s Racial Equity Collaborative, and he is the founder of the Metropolitan Boston Dean’s Group created to help local Deans share resources, best practices and support.
Looking ahead, Jonathan is extremely excited to participate in and learn from the Lynch Leadership Academy experience and he also hopes to research the effectiveness of Restorative Justice Practices in building and sustaining vibrant school communities.
In his free time Jonathan enjoys reminiscing on his B-boy days and being reminded by his wife and three beautiful children that dad’s getting old!
