Kelly M. Hung | Principal, Phineas Bates Elementary School
Kelly M. Hung is serving in her fifth year as principal of the Phineas Bates Elementary School in Roslindale. During her time at the Bates they have twice been named as a “School on the Move” by Edvestors and have increased student growth in ELA and MATH from (38% in 2009) to (50.5% for ELA in 2011) and (65% for Math in 2012). Mrs. Hung has established seven new partnerships with local community programs and universities that did not exist prior to 2009. During her tenure, the number of students on the waitlist to enter K1 and K2 has increased, and the number of Bates students who test into the Bates advanced work class program has increased. Prior to assuming this role Mrs. Hung served as the Interim Principal of the Manning Elementary School, assuming all leadership duties while the principal was on maternity leave. She is a 2008 Boston Principal Fellow and was based at the Sumner Elementary School. She previously served as a Principal Intern and Senior Boston Connects Coordinator at the Hamilton Elementary School and she began her teaching career in 2002 a third grade inclusion classroom with the Boston Public Schools at the Jackson-Mann K-8. Mrs. Hung holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah with a double major in psychology and human development, a master’s degree from Boston College in counseling psychology and a Certificate of Advanced Education Specialization (C.A.E.S.) from Boston College in educational administration.
