Students, faculty and working professionals attended the annual Leadership for Change event on Thursday, October 29
, 2009 at Boston College. Responding to the United Nations FAO estimate that 1.09 billion people will go hungry in 2009, thepanelists and audience addressed the challenges of world hunger and poverty. Paolo Barilla, from Barilla Pasta, focused on the pro-active role and initiatives that responsible organizations must address. Rob Everts shared the Equal Exchange model of engaging local farmers with the global challenge. Professor Charles Derber raised concern that food production is increasingly controlled by large corporations. Boston College senior, Sarah King shared concerns about the environment and the role of sustainable practices in food access. In summary, the president of FONDACA in Italy, Giovanni Moro emphasized the significance of personal action and corporate responsibility.Activating Sustainability:Is Corporate Greening for Real and Can it Stop Global Warming? Over 175 students, faculty, alumni and business practitioners engaged in dialogue on January 28, 2008 with Massachusetts, Lt. Governor, Tim Murray, Boston College Professor Charles Derber, and President of FONDACA, Professor Giovanni Moro from Rome, Italy. Only 54% of those eligible to vote in America have exercised that right in the past nine elections. Several questions were discussed; Are American disillusioned by the political parties or the electoral process? Do we trust the media for accurate information? Civic involvement in democracy emerged as a critical issue based on the questions and comments. What can you do to be an active citizen?
