Honors Program Committees
Several standing committees accomplish the work of the Honors Program. For more information about any of the committees, please contact one of the chairpersons using the names and e-mail addresses provided in the Current Officers & E-board section.
The Alumni Relations Committee, maintains communication with the Honors Program’s fifteen hundred alumni. The committee is in charge of organizing events that bring alumni and current members together in many different settings. Events include internship and career panels where current members can ask questions of alumni who have had experiences that interest them. Also, this committee is useful in establishing connections between graduates and current students to provide mentorship opportunities, internships and full-time employment upon graduation.
The Career Development Committee is dedicated to making students aware of career opportunities at every stage of their college years and beyond. Much of this is accomplished through researching industry opportunities and maintaining a free flow of information between members of the program. Furthermore, the committee is responsible for helping students with the creation of résumés and cover letters, as well as preparing for interviews and networking events.
The Community Service Committee is responsible for organizing the overwhelmingly popular First Serve event that takes place before the school year begins each September. The committee finds local community service placements for Honors Program members to attend for a day, in addition to planning a Recreation Day for local YMCA kids on Newton Campus. These community service events are a way for Program members to bond while helping other members of the community. The Committee also organizes the Honors Program tutoring program for the benefit of non-Honors Program students in the Carroll School, and plans other community service events throughout the year, such as trips to homeless shelters.
The Finance Committee, works with the Treasurer to develop the program's budget and ensure that there is sufficient funding for the various needs of the Program and is responsible for a variety of fund-raising activities. Collecting dues from student members and coordinating concessions activities at BC sporting events are just two such fund-raising activities.
The Freshman Admissions Committee, is responsible for the freshman admission process that takes place during the spring semester of each year. Through this process, the Program selects a handful of new Freshman students from a large applicant pool of freshmen wishing to join the Program. This committee is also responsible for contacting and welcoming future freshmen who have been accepted into the Program and are still deciding whether to attend Boston College.
The Information Technology Committee, is in charge of compiling and creating instruments such as this website and provides regular communication to the membership about upcoming activities and events as well as notices for Program meetings.
The Public Relations Committee manages and coordinates the exchange of information both within the Program and with other organizations. Its duties range from making campus news sources aware of Program activities to disseminating information to prospective students.
The Social & Integration Committee organizes numerous activities for the Honors Program with the goal of fostering friendships among students across all four years. For example, the Integration Committee hosts Sunday Barbeques, weekend gatherings to watch Boston College sports teams in action, and other activities to foster a camaraderie among the students that extends beyond the classroom. Each academic year concludes with the Carroll School of Management Honors Program banquet which students and professors are invited to attend. This annual event is a wonderful way to close the academic year and launch a summer of opportunity for personal growth and enrichment. The banquet allows the students another occasion to interact with their professors in a setting outside of the classroom.
The Speaker Series Committee identifies and brings to campus distinguished speakers who discuss topics relevant to the general Boston College community as well as the business community. Some speakers that the Program has hosted in the past are Boston mayor Thomas Menino and the founder of SparkNotes.
