What company did you intern with?
Barclay's Capital
Where were you located?
New York City
What was your position?
Sales & Trading Summer Analyst (only sales aspect though)
What were your basic responsibilities?
One final presentation at the end of the summer. One smaller presentation for each desk rotation (4). Read the WSJ, NY Times, CNN everyday, asked to perform smaller tasks to help out the desk, given quizzes and lots to read.
How many hours did you work per week?
70 hours
Describe a typical day of work.
Get in at around 6:15. Make photocopies of a daily publication and distribute them to the desk. Go to the morning meeting around 7 and take notes. Type notes and create trade ideas. Take breakfast order and go get breakfast for the desk. Listen to calls and ask questions until noon. If everyone was busy I would work on my own projects and talk to the traders / researchers. Go out and get lunch for the desk around noon. Ask questions in the afternoon and network with as many people as possible. Stay late and leave around 7.
What did you like best about your internship?
I learned a ton – they gave us a lot of projects so we were never bored. I rotated through four desks so I got exposure to a lot of different people / products.
What did you like least about your internship?
It's very overwhelming and you walk in there knowing nothing. Be prepared to feel stupid and intimidated.
What did you think of the company as a whole?
It is great – loved the culture.
Can you offer any tips for interviewing with this particular company?
Learn about Barclays' history and the CEO's goals for the future. Be passionate and know why you want the job / why they should pick you. Be as excited as you can and don't be afraid of it.
Considering your experience, would you recommend this internship to other students?
Absolutely.
