Carroll School of Management

PhD in Organization Studies (Management and Organization Department)

Internationally-known faculty members work with a small cohort of PhD candidates each year. While diverse in the questions we ask, our program emphasizes research that focuses on process - be it the process of self-definition, innovation, or transformation - at the individual, organizational and institutional levels of analysis.  Faculty expertise falls into centers of excellence that focus on identity and identification, creativity, meaning-making, organizational strategy, and culture.  In addition, we are one of the few programs that have deep expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methods.  Although students regularly collaborate with faculty in conducting research, students are also encouraged to define their own research programs and interests and pursue them through writing their third-year paper, dissertation, and other presentations and papers.

In addition, students have the opportunity to work with three Boston College centers. The Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics, The Center for Work and Family, and The Center for Corporate Community Citizenship can provide opportunities for student research and connections with managers working in these areas. An array of guest speakers, works-in-progress, and brown bags are regularly held to provide students with contact with top scholars in the field of Management and Organization.
