Stephen Hart, BC MBA '12
United States Coast Guard
October 7, 2011
Lieutenant Stephen Hart, ’12 has been working as an active-duty Coast Guard officer for four years before enrolling for his MBA degree at the Carroll School of Management. He's one of 20 students pursuing a dual degree through the Carroll School this year — specifically he's doing an MBA along with a master’s of science in accounting. Hart loved his training as a Coast Guard officer. Each day was different – some days he'd be patrolling the North Atlantic on search and rescue missions. Other days, he’d be on Homeland Security operations protecting the coastline. The training he received from the Coast Guard Academy was also superb, he says. "Because the class-sizes are smaller, you get to know everybody really well. The leadership opportunities they give you at an early age are phenomenal.”
As an MBA student at the Carroll School, all of this is coming in really handy. He is one of only a few Coast Guard officers at the Carroll School which distinguishes him from other students. The situations he's had as a Coast Guard officer where he had to be decisive and take leadership now helps him in group projects. He can come to decisions quickly, especially when there is no straightforward answer.
When Hart graduates next summer he anticipates being stationed at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington D.C., probably in a finance role. Already, he feels completely grateful for everything he's learned at the Carroll School. He loves the camaraderie among the students, how down to earth and kind the faculty is and the excellent education he's receiving. “Being here is a huge opportunity and a highlight of my life,” he says.
