Donald White, PhD

Dean Emeritus and Distinguished Emeritus Professor - Organization Studies Department

Donald White graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston College and received his MA and PhD in Economics from Harvard University. He also holds an honorary LHD degree from Boston College. A member of the faculty since 1946, he has also served as Associate Dean of the Carroll School of Management, 1955-1961, and as the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and Associate Dean of Faculties, 1971–1994.

He is a past chairman of the Council of Graduate Schools and past chairman of the Graduate Record Examination Board. He was founding Vice President of the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools and the first Recipient of its Award of Excellence. He has also served as Professor of Economics and as Adjunct Professor of Law teaching arbitration in the Boston College Law School. He has been a Visiting Professor at M.I.T.’s Sloan School of Management and for 32 years was a Special Lecturer on Wage Administration, Benefit Plans and Economic Analysis in the Harvard University Trade Union Program. He joined the Department of Organization Studies in 1994.

Dr. White’s professional and research interests are in negotiating, dispute resolution and collective bargaining. He is a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators and is former New England Regional Chairman. He is on the Roster of Arbitrators of the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service, the American Arbitration Association and is a member of the Panel of Neutrals of the Massachusetts Joint Labor Management Committee on Police and Fire. He is a charter member of the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution and the Industrial Relations Research Association. He has served as mediator or arbitrator in a wide variety of disputes in both the private and public sectors.
