Thomas J. Chemmanur

Thomas J. Chemmanur is Professor of Finance at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his Ph.D. in Finance from the Stern School of Business, New York University. He received his prior graduate education in management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and  received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kerala University. Prior to joining Boston College, Dr. Chemmanur was Associate Professor of  Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. He has also taught at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, and the Stern School of Business, New York University.

His main research interests are in theoretical and empirical corporate finance, with secondary research interests in applied game theory, contract theory, and industrial organization. His recent research has focused on various aspects of the initial public offerings (IPOs) and seasoned issues of equity (SEOs); venture capital and angel financing contracts; the role of venture capitalists in initial public offerings; optimal disclosure and litigation rules for IPOs; the competition and co-operation between stock exchanges, and resulting effects on the listing standards of exchanges and the listing decisions of firms; the sources of  firm value created by spin-offs, carve-outs, and tracking stock issues; the role of institutional investors in various corporate events; the choice of  firms between stock and cash payments in mergers and acquisitions; the interaction between the quality of a firm’s management team and various aspects of its financial polices and corporate governance; the rationale for and the optimal design of financial innovations such as mandatory and puttable convertible securities; the interaction between product and financial markets; and the optimal structure of leasing contracts. Dr. Chemmanur’s research has been presented at a number of national and international conferences, and has been published in top scholarly journals in finance, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Journal of Financial Intermediation.

Dr. Chemmanur has organized several academic conferences, including the Journal of Financial Intermediation Symposium at Boston College, and served on the Program Committees  of several leading national and international conferences such as the annual meetings of the Western Finance Association, the European Finance Association, and the Financial Management Association for several years. He has served as editor of a special issue of the Journal of Financial Intermediation, on “New Technologies, Financial Innovation, and Intermediation.” He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for the Review of Financial Studies and Studies in Economics and Finance. His research has been supported by grants from several national and international bodies.
