Solutions Marketing
Professor Stephen Hurley
Technology and professional services firms have moved aggressively over the last few years to improve their ability to provide true solutions to their customer base. Marketers are leading the charge to shift at least a portion of their portfolios from discrete products and services to more integrated, business-oriented solutions. Solutions Marketing: Transforming the Business provides a hands-on immersion in the models, tools, and best practice examples that companies need to market and sell solutions. The concept of solutions marketing is a new one – there is very little written about it in academia. In several leading industries, however, it is becoming the dominant business model. Technology-based companies, professional services firms, and financial services companies are leading the way in moving to a solutions model. This course will provide the latest thinking and techniques that are being applied inside some of the world’s biggest and most influential companies. Many of the insights provided the students are drawn from the research and consulting experiences of ITSMA, the world’s leading services/solutions marketing and sales association focused primarily on the technology sector.
Professor Hurley has spent most of his career in management consulting, focused on international economic development, sales and marketing, and training and education. He spent nearly 20 years with Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL), in a number of senior positions including Director of Executive Education with the Arthur D. Little School of Management, Director in the International Economics and Finance Group, and finally head of global training and learning for the company. After ADL , Steve spent nearly 10 years as Vice President of ITSMA, the leading marketing and sales association for technology-based companies. He wrote numerous papers and publications on marketing-related topics and issues, and had a highly visible blog on how companies can make the transition from services to solutions. He has taught marketing courses at the University of Massachusetts, Babson College, University of Bordeaux, and the University of New Hampshire.

Realize Strategy: Consultant's Guide to Implementing Strategy
Professor Hitendra Patel
(Workshop Format)
The relentless forces of changing customer needs, globalization, cost containment, deregulation, and technological change, combined with the drive for sustainable profitable growth require companies to continually rethink their business strategies. More than 70% of these new strategies are poorly implemented and have not been realized. This course is about techniques and methodologies for improving the success rate of realizing the goals of a company’s newly formulated strategy. It is neither about strategy formulation nor about strategy execution but the link (perhaps the missing link) between the two. This course is about developing the optimal design for executing and realizing that strategy using the REALIZETM Strategy Execution Methodology.
The course will combine learning in the classroom, case studies, readings and implementation simulations. It will be taught by a team of experienced Management Consultants and draw upon external experts.
Dr. Hitendra Patel has recently been appointed as “Professor of Innovation and Growth” at Hult International Business School. Hitendra brings to Hult a wealth of experience in the fields of innovation and management consulting.Concurrent with his Hult faculty appointment, Hitendra will assume duties as Director of the Center for Innovation, eXcellence and Leadership in Cambridge. Service Operations
Professor George Kastner
(Workshop Format)
Under increasing competitive pressure, executives are re-examining the issues related to the delivery of services to customers as efficiently as possible. Broadly speaking, services cover all sectors of the economy that do not belong to primary industries (agriculture and mining), or secondary industries (manufacturing). The rapid expansion in information and communication technologies fuel growth in the services industry. This will enable service processes across all industries to operate more economically. Services are not limited to skilled professional labor only, it includes non skilled labor as well, and in addition it is impacted by all aspects of immigration. Thus, the course explores ways to apply accumulated knowledge on service delivery to a variety of cultures at different cycles of economic and industrial development.

Innovation
Professor Hitendra Patel
(Workshop Format)
The world is flat - the traditional basis for differentiation whether in sourcing specific talent, having exclusive access to customers, owning unique intellectual property for production or having lower cost of capital is no longer true. These differentiators are now accessible to most companies and no longer provide a competitive advantage. Interestingly even in this environment, some companies are still able to differentiate and lead in the market and they are doing this through Innovation. Today innovation has emerged as the next and perhaps last great differentiate.
As a result, it is rare to hear a CEO not talk about the importance of innovation or to see an annual report of a company which does not mention innovation, however, these same CEOs are struggling to make innovation real. In this course, you will learn about frameworks, tools and techniques developed by world-class consulting firms and deployed to make innovation real across industries and geographies by the professor in companies like HP, CEMEX, Bunge, Frito Lay, LG and many other companies. You will learn about the power of platforms, partners and portfolios to lead innovation and you will learn about systems and processes, the competences, organization and culture to support innovation. The most important thing that you will learn is to think differently about innovation and to act differently to make innovation real.
Dr. Hitendra Patel has recently been appointed as “Professor of Innovation and Growth” at Hult International Business School. Hitendra brings to Hult a wealth of experience in the fields of innovation and management consulting.
Concurrent with his Hult faculty appointment, Hitendra will assume duties as Director of the Center for Innovation, eXcellence and Leadership in Cambridge. Dr. Patel was one of the senior leaders and co-founder of Monitor Innovation at the Monitor Group. He was previously Asia and Latin America Head of Innovation Management.
