High marks, February
Below is a sampling of distinctions earned at the Carroll School of Management during the past two months.
- Boston College's Chief Executive Club is the top speakers forum of its type in the U.S. and number two in the world, according to a study of "five-star speaking forums" conducted by the global public relations firm Weber Shandwick. Read the Reuters story.
- The Carroll School's MBA program viewbook won "silver" in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's 2008 communications awards. See the viewbook [pdf]. See the awards list.
- Edward Kane, Cleary Professor of Finance, has been named the Midwest Finance Association's 2008 Distinguished Scholar. He will deliver a lecture, entitled "Central Banks and Decapitalized Institutions: The More Things Change, the More They Remain the Same," at the association's annual meeting in San Antonio on February 29. The January 3 Providence Journal contained an article on the FDIC's action to assure that American banks retain adequate capital reserves under a new international agreement. Read the article. - Dean Andy Boynton was quoted in a Canada Free Press December 12 review of Think Better: An Innovator's Guide to Productive Thinking, by Tim Hurson (McGraw Hill, 2007). Read the review. Boynton was also acknowledged by Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's Mad Money,who praised Boynton and the Carroll School while responding to a caller's inquiry. Watch the program segment [wvm].
- Kathleen Seiders, associate professor of marketing, discussed holiday season high-pressure marketing techniques on CBS 3 of Philadelphia. Watch the segment. She was also on NPR's Marketplace, reflecting on American consumers' buying habits. Listen to the story. She was heard again on Marketplace after the holidays, discussing the Internet's secondary market for gift cards. Listen to the segment. And with Valentine's Day approaching, a January 10 Boston Globe article quoted Seiders on this year's crop of messages printed on the New England Confectionery Company's candy hearts. - Research from the Center for Retirement Research was widely cited. The financial status of widows was described in the December 1 edition of KansasCity.com, the website of the Kansas City Star. The January 17 Earthtimes reported on the center's project on the increasing prevalence of defined contribution plans for public employees, commissioned by the Center for State and Local Government Excellence. The January 27 USA Today presented advice from the Center for Retirement Research's director Alicia Munnell on how retirees should allocate their assets between income annuities and other investments. - Bradley Googins, executive director of the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, organizational psychologist Philip Mirvis, associate staff member of the Center, and Steven Rochlin, the center's former director of research and policy development, are co-authors of the just-released Beyond Good Company: Next Generation Corporate Citizenship (Palgrave MacMillan, 2007). - The December 18 Environmental Leader, a daily trade publication for corporate executives, contained an article entitled "State of Corporate Citizenship in the U.S.," featuring a report from the Center for Corporate Citizenship. - Professor of Organization Studies Judith Gordon, who chairs the New England Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, gave testimony to a federal panel that advises the U.S. education secretary on accreditation. See a report in the December 19 Inside Higher Ed.
- Assistant Professor of Marketing S. Adam Brasel talked about McDonald's new "McCafes" in the January 8 Boston Herald. Read the article.
