The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made, by Walter Isaacson and Evan Thomas (Simon & Schuster, 1986), is a lively history that tracks the role that six American statesmen and friends together played in developing this country's transformation into a global power following World War II. The authors powerfully describe the atmosphere of trust, respect, and shared ideas in which these six intellectual giants—Dean Acheson, Charles Bohlen, Averell Harriman, George Kennan, Robert Lovett, and John McCloy, Jr.—forged American foreign policy.  read more »

This issue of Carroll Capital features three Carroll School of Management faculty who hold editorial positions in prominent journals in their fields.

In June 2009, Accenture Professor of Marketing Katherine ("Kay") Lemon will become editor of the Journal of Service Research (JSR), a marketing publication sponsored by the University of Maryland's Center for Excellence in Service. Lemon began her professional career as a marketing executive in the medical services and high-technology fields.   read more »

David Chapman is associate editor of the Journal of Finance, the world's third most frequently cited economic journal, with the fourth highest "impact factor" (as measured by Thompson Scientific). Published by the American Finance Association, the Journal of Finance features "leading research across all the major fields." Chapman, an associate professor of finance who previously taught at the University of Texas and the University of Rochester, values his editorial role, which he has held since 2000, because it enables him to see "early versions of research from a broad set of scholars." read more »

The American Business Law Journal, a publication of the American Business Law Association, is "one of the few double-blind peer review journals," says Associate Professor of Business Law Stephanie Greene, who, as one of the publication's five managing editors, assigns reviewers to read and critique submissions. "Our mission is to publish articles that are interesting and relevant to today's business environment," says Greene. "All topics are fair game: corporate governance, non-compete agreements, intellectual property law, and fiduciary relations. We have a scholarly orientation at the nexus of business and law." read more »

Below is a sampling of distinctions earned at the Carroll School of Management during the past two months.


  • The Carroll School of Management's full-time MBA program rose to 34th in the nation, an historic high, as reported in the March 26 issue of U.S. News & World Report. The magazine reviews more than 1,200 programs and consults some 14,000 academics and professionals to establish its rankings, which, it explains, are "based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students." The Carroll School's Evening MBA Program ascended to number 15 in the latest U.S. News ratings, representing five consecutive years in the top 20 nationwide.  Read the article.
  • In its February 28 article "The Best Undergrad B-Schools," BusinessWeek ranked the Carroll School 14th in the nation, commenting, "Real-world lessons, helpful career-services staff, and active alumni network give BC the edge." The magazine bases its rankings on nine factors, including surveys of business majors and corporate recruiters, median starting salaries for graduates, faculty-student ratios, and the number of graduates who go on to "preeminent" MBA programs.  Read the article.
