Jason Robert Brown's critically-acclaimed musical Songs for a New World will be presented at Boston College on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30PM in the Robsham Theater Arts Center. The Boston College production represents the culmination of a year-long relationship between the University and its Visiting Monan Professor of Theatre Arts, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, who is spending the 2008-09 academic year on campus working with students and faculty on a series of programs. Ms. Campbell will direct Songs for a New World, featuring both current students and Boston College alumni actively working in the music, theater and entertainment fields in New York City and Boston.

Mary-Mitchell Campbell is an award-winning, multi-talented musician and composer. She recently worked as Stephen Sondheim's musical director for Road Show, which opened in November at the Public Theatre in New York. She is currently the musical director for The Addams Family, a new musical set to premiere on Broadway in Spring 2010. Ms. Campbell is also one of the founders of
ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty), a human service organization that brings artists to impoverished areas to educate young people. Proceeds from ticket sales will be shared by the Boston College Arts Council and ASTEP. New York based actor/singer Michelle Miller '98, a frequent lecturer in the BC Theatre Department and Vice Chair of ASTEP, will work with Ms. Campbell on the production.

Show Synopsis

Jason Robert Brown, the author of this provacative revue, states, “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” Brown (composer-lyricist of the critical smash Parade, The Last Five Years, and Broadway's recently acclaimed 13) has the whole theatre community talking about his blend of savvy showmanship and exciting contemporary sound.

Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue to meet a startling array of characters ranging from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. These are the stories and characters of today, the songs for a new world.

With a small, powerhouse multi-ethnic cast and a driving, exquisitely crafted score running the gamut of today’s popular music, Songs for a New World is a great way to bring the next generation into the theatre. It’s a remarkable achievement from a remarkable new voice.
