Theater Major and the Academic Program
theatre department - morrissey college of arts and sciences
The Theatre Department offers one degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. Students who wish to major in theatre must successfully complete a minimum of 12 three-credit courses, six of which are required and six of which are elected by the student. In addition, a theater major is required to complete six theatre production labs which involve work in the shops or backstage on department productions.
The Theatre Department offers a full spectrum of courses in theater production and performance and an extensive roster of courses in dramatic literature and theater history. Many upper-level courses have prerequisites, so students are advised to plan their coursework accordingly.
The Theatre Department places an emphasis on academic advising and pre-professional mentoring. We are committed to helping students plan their undergraduate careers, discover their academic and creative strengths, and prepare for life after graduation. All theater majors and double majors without a designated departmental faculty advisor should contact the Chair of the Department in order to have one assigned.
The Theatre Department does not operate or participate directly in any study abroad programs. Theater majors considering study abroad should meet with their departmental advisor a year in advance for academic planning purposes. Those who have definite plans to study abroad should confer with the Chair of the Department before they go. For information about study abroad opportunities contact the Office of International Programs.
Certification in Theater for Education Majors
Elementary Education or Secondary Education/English majors in the Lynch School of Education may follow a program that allows them to seek alternative certification in Theater from the Massachusetts Department of Education. For more information contact Dr. Luke Jorgensen.
