While focusing on social justice and equality, research in the Boston College Sociology Department covers a broad range of specializations in a number of geographical locations. Our faculty research includes projects such as Eva Garroutte's investigation of Health Communication with American Indian Elders, funded by the National Institute of Health, or Lisa Dodson's exploration of the family survival strategies of low-wage mothers. We are also affiliated with several research organizations like the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy, which is a recognized authority on the relation between economic wherewithal and philanthropy, the motivations for charitable involvement, and the underlying meaning and practice of care.
Our graduates, undergraduates, and alumni are also part of this research community, which investigates social issues in the Boston area, in other countries, and on an international level. And every year the Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series brings in prominent intellectuals from other locations to share information in their own specialties, and to engage in our ongoing conversation about the expansion of social justice and equality.
More frequently (about twice a month), our department hosts a Scholarly Events Series, in which a BC faculty member, graduate student, or an intellectual from another institution discusses his or her current research project with other scholars from our department and elsewhere. Topics covered in this series are listed on the Departmental Seminar page, and times and dates for all of our special events can be found on our departmental calendar.
