Open Mic
Tuesday, May 2 7 - 9 pm
Vanderslice Hall, Boston College Campus, Chestnut Hill
To participate, contact Jonas Westbrook at westbroj@bc.edu or 617-556-7555.
The funds raised from this open mic will go towards the construction and installation of water filters in poor rural areas near San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. San Juan is where 13 BC students and 2 faculty spent their spring break. Their activities included the construction and installation of water filters; working with the local library to bring books to rural schools -- the students at one of these we visited received their first-ever library card and library books; teaching classes in English at the local high school; and much much more.
If you can't attend, but would like to make a donation, Professor Malec will gladly accept your check. Contaminated water is the leading cause of infant mortality in Central America. We are working to support a project that is bringing filter to poor rural communities, schools, and families. Clean water saves lives.
- Thirty dollars will cover a poor family's contribution for a (subsidized) filter,
- Seventy-four dollars will cover the full cost of the construction and installation of one filter.
- Any amount, from a dollar on up, will be put to good use.
- According to the World Health Organization, approximately 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases (WHO: Water, sanitation and hygiene links to health. Facts and Figures. 2002. Also Water and Health, 2002).
(Checks may be made out to "Newton-San Juan Sister City Project". The memo should read "BC water filter project".)
