The main campus of Boston College (the Chestnut Hill campus) is located at the border of Chestnut Hill and Newton. It is approximately six miles west of the city of Boston.
FROM POINTS NORTH AND SOUTH: Take Interstate 95 (Route 128) to Exit 24 (Route 30). Proceed east on Route 30, also known as Commonwealth Avenue, and follow for about five miles to Boston College. Take a right immediately after St. Ignatius Church and follow it to Beacon. At Beacon, take a right and then take the next right to get to the Beacon Street parking lot. Get a permit from the guard. The upper and lower floors of the parking lot are for visitors.
FROM POINTS WEST: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to Exit 17. At the first set of lights after the exit ramp, take a right onto Centre Street. Follow Centre Street to the fourth set of lights, and turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue. Follow Commonwealth Avenue 1-1/2 miles to Boston College.
FROM DOWNTOWN BOSTON: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to Exit 17. Take a left over the bridge after passing the Sheraton Tara Hotel. Take the first right onto Centre Street. Follow above directions from Centre Street.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: The Boston College branch of the MBTA's
"Green Line" (B) ends at the Boston-Newton boundary on Commonwealth
Avenue. Cross the street and walk by St. Ignatius Church and follow the perimeter
road around to campus entrances.
Directions to Sociology Department:
From Beacon Street Garage:
Enter the campus on the road beside St. Ignatius Church. Follow this road all the way to Beacon (where it will end) and make a right. Take your first right into the visitor's parking garage, and park on one of the top two floors. (The dotted line on the map shows the way to the garage.) You'll have to take a ticket to park; parking is free on weekends and for the first two hours at any time. From from 2am Monday to 5pm Friday, parking beyond 2 hours is $2 per hour up to a daily maximum of $10 (see the Transportation web page).
To get to the Sociology Department, head down to level 2, which is the level of the Beacon Street entrance. Exit, turn right, and walk beside the stadium (it'll be on your right side). When you see the driveway circle around, bear to the left and take the stairs and the walkway up past Campion building (the School of Education, on your left). The pathway will dead end into a cross road; McGuinn is directly on the other side of the road. The Sociology Department is on the 4th floor. Handicap access is in the back of the building.
From Commonwealth Avenue
Go past St. Ignatius and make a right onto the campus. Walk to the Commonwealth Avenue parking garage, a seven story parking structure on your right. Take the elevator to the 7th floor, walk through the parking area, and take a left on the first pathway you reach. Follow it until you reach McGuinn Hall, which will be the last building on your right before exiting the campus to Beacon Street. The Sociology Department is on the 4th floor, and the main office is directly to your right after getting off the elevator.
