Nick Linfante knew he wanted to be a teacher when he graduated from high school but as a BC classics major he discovered what teaching really means. “[Associate professor of classics] Fr. David Gill sat down with me and asked ‘What did you read in high school?’ He went through BC’s Latin curriculum course-by-course, saying ‘This would be good, this would be too hard.’ The great thing was that he wanted to know ‘How can we make this the experience best for you.’” Today, as head of the classics department at a private high school, Linfante tries to provide the kind of mentorship he enjoyed. “My students know I know them well and that I care,” he said. “It’s really important to give kids all the good stuff I had—to emulate the best aspects of the best teachers.”
