PULSE Program

Youth on Fire

Nature and Purpose
Youth on Fire (YOF), a program of Cambridge Cares About AIDS, is committed to the premise that everyone has the right to physical and mental wellness regardless of whether they are housed or not.  We acknowledge the need for a youth specific safe space for homeless and street involved young adults ages 14-24 years old.  Youth on Fire is a free, safe, caring, relaxed, non-judgmental, and confidential place where youth can access services to help them reduce their risks and maintain control of their lives.  These services include: healthcare, counseling and support, hot meals, showers, laundry, clothing, anonymous HIV C&T, free voicemail, internet access, educational and employment opportunities, housing advocacy, peer-led education and support groups, art supplies, and referrals to additional services.

Tasks

Students would serve as volunteer staff members of Youth on Fire, spending the majority of their time working directly with members. Each student will be assigned to a different case manager, i.e. the Arts and Development Case Manager, Health Education/Counseling & Testing Case Manager, and Clinical Case Manager.  Responsibilities will vary depending on which area volunteers are assigned to.  On a regular basis, volunteers will greet and serve the youth, screen members at reception, interact with youth on the floor and become a resource for housing, health, drug-related issues and employment.

Time Requirements
Students are expected to work two four-hour shifts per week between the hours of 11:30-6 PM (MWF), 1:30-6PM (Th) and TBA (Tu).

Supervision
Youth on Fire will hold mandatory supervision every other week and will also be available for additional support or guidance on an as-needed basis. Robert Owens will provide on-site supervision. Supervision will be in additio n to regularly scheduled shifts.
