Nature and Purpose
The Women's Lunch Place was founded in 1982 to provide poor and homeless women in Boston with access to food, friendship, and a refuge from the streets during the day. We currently provide more than 150 women and their children with healthy and nutritious meals, plus an array of social, educational, and advocacy services six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. Guests are also offered access to free medical care, clothing, art classes and outings to venues such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the John F. Kennedy Library, and the Boston Duck Tours. We treat our guests with dignity and respect, and foster a community that is committed to meeting each woman's specific needs. Volunteers and staff play an important role in the delivery of these services.
Tasks
PULSE students can support our work in a variety of areas. Some of these include: sorting donations and distributing personal care items to guests; working in our kitchen to prepare and serve breakfast and/or lunch; managing daily activities in our Resource Center; providing guests with access to basic services such as showers and laundry; helping with special events and activities; assisting with administrative duties in the WLP office; and teaching a class or running an activity for guests with support from WLP staff. Please note that we also encourage students to take on personal projects -- the sky is the limit!
We are looking for two students from PULSE. Students are required to attend a volunteer orientation and to participate in any trainings that are relevant to their particular position(s).
Time Requirements
Days and times are negotiable, depending on the student's desired placement. Students are expected to work a consistent schedule that overlaps with our hours of operation. Each student must work a minimum of 9 hours per week.
Supervision
PULSE students will have weekly meetings with their WLP administrative supervisor, as well as their direct supervisor(s) as needed.
