Nature and Purpose
Located in the Upham's Corner area of Dorchester, the St. Kevin's Afterschool Tutoring Program ("Skat") is a program for inner city youth in grades k1-8. As an after school program it has a strong focus on academic achievement. As a Catholic institution, our work extends beyond academics to encompass the whole child's development- emotionally, physically, and spiritually. To address this goal, we also have an enrichment time each day. Activities during this time can range from working on computers, academic enrichment, and sports, games, and guest speakers, to character development, role playing, discussion groups, and faith sharing.
Tasks
On a daily basis an average of 50 kids attend the program and we are always looking for more volunteers to help. PULSE volunteers work directly with city youth as tutors, mentors, and friends helping them with homework, high school entrance preparation, and extra academic exercises focused on each child's particular needs. PULSE students are encouraged not only to build positive relationships as role models with the youth, but also to help plan and run events- especially for the enrichment time.
Time Requirement
Shifts are available Monday-Thursday, 2PM- 5:00PM.
