Nature and Purpose
The Rockwell House at 28 Rockwell St. in Dorchester is a permanent residence for up to 10 formerly homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS. This is a supportive housing program that is operated by Paul Sullivan Housing at Pine Street Inn and offers case management, an evening meal, frequent activities and 16-24 hour staffing daily. Staff provides an environment for residents where they feel safe and secure, in addition to working with residents to help improve their physical and mental health and ensuring their basic needs are met. Resocialization is also an important aspect of what we provide for many residents whose lives have been impacted by issues of homelessness and substance abuse. Staff and volunteers strive to make this a home that will provide the highest quality of life for each resident on any given day.
Tasks
Evening Meal: The evening meal is the only time of the day that the residents come together to partake in a family style meal. PULSE students will assist in the preparation, participation, and clean-up of the evening meal.
Activities: An activities coordinator plans recreational activities according to the specifications and requests of the residents. PULSE students may accompany individuals and groups on outings such as movie matinees, walks, trips to special events, etc.
Practical Support: Staff and volunteers must be willing to do what is best and necessary to create a comfortable and safe setting for residents. Volunteers who are flexible in this sense are needed. PULSE students may be asked to answer phones, assist with gardening, or decorate for a special event.
Time Requirements
PULSE students are required to commit two semesters to Rockwell House. Students are asked to work 8-10 hours per week and schedules will be negotiated with the Administrator. Early evening hours availability is needed. Orientation and training will be conducted on site. Two students will be selected for this placement.
Supervision
Supervision is provided by our case manager and activities coordinator who will be available for all or part of the PULSE student's scheduled work hours. Weekly meetings will be held to touch base for upcoming events.
