Nature and Purpose
The Parents' Center is a specialized program providing day care to very young children, from two months to 2.9 years old. The Parents' Center is a program of the Home for Little Wanderers. The Center is located in a single-family home in Brighton and serves 16 children and their families. Historically, families at the center are involved with the Department of Social Services due to histories of abuse and neglect. Currently, DSS-involved families make up the majority of the population we serve. We also provide services to families in the community who are paying for childcare.
Tasks
The student will be expected to provide for individual needs, to be aware of the child's growth and development, and to provide corrective experiences for the children when appropriate. In fulfilling these objectives, the student will work with one of the classroom teachers, aiding the teacher in activities or providing one-to-one attention for a child. Students will also help with the Center's routines, getting meals for the children, and supervising play. Some knowledge of child behavior and psychology will be helpful.
Supervision
Students must be able to be at the Center two mornings a week for a minimum of 10 hours a week. Shifts are from approximately 8:00AM. - 12:30 PM. Each student will be supervised on a weekly basis by the classroom teacher with whom the student is working. At the beginning of each semester, all students are given a group orientation to the Center and to the field of the study of child abuse and neglect. Transportation time to the Center is about fifteen minutes each way from BC.
