Nature and Purpose
Tufts Medical Center and The Floating Hospital for Children Emergency Department is part of a large urban academic comprehensive medical center in downtown Boston. We serve a diverse population ethnically, culturally and socioeconomically. We provide a complete range of services for children and adults including trauma. Our mission is to heal, comfort, promote health and prevent disease, dedicate ourselves to furthering our rich tradition of health care innovation, leadership, charity and the highest standard of care and service to all in our community.
Tasks
All service learning students will be based in the Emergency Department and participate with supporting patient care in the clinical environment. There will be a lot of patient contact and clinical observation. We would like to encourage, but not be limited to, pre-med and nursing students with strong computer skills for these positions. A patient survey will be delivered to all patients to help track healthcare disparities and areas of improvement within the Emergency Department. The survey is part of an ongoing study. Students will be asked to meet as a group on selected Saturday mornings for case study review, discussion and graphing of survey results. Students will be encouraged to present findings at monthly department meetings to physicians and administrative staff.
Time Requirements
A flexible schedule for afternoons, evenings and weekends is required. A two-semester commitment is essential as the study and work is very comprehensive. Computer skills such as Word and Excel, are strongly preferred.
Supervision and Training
Emergency Department service learning students will assist and observe a mentor to learn the inner workings of emergency care, which will also include a patient survey to track healthcare disparities. The study will be closely monitored and supervised by the Nursing Support Supervisor. Meetings will be set up on an individual and group basis to discuss obstacles, questions and concerns. General orientation and security clearance will be provided immediately before the start of the Emergency Department placement.
