Nature and Purpose
Jamaica Plain (JP) is a dynamic, vibrant bilingual community and one of the most integrated neighborhoods in Boston. The Hyde Square Task Force addresses community issues through programming that includes an Evening Tutorial Program/Programa de Tutoria for students in middle and high school and an Afterschool Program for students in grades 1-4. The Task Force youth programs uplift the community by challenging students to succeed academically and by encouraging neighborhood kids to get involved with organizations that build trust, positive relationships, responsibility and role modeling, and pride in their community.
Tasks
PULSE students are required to enter into a collaborative endeavor with each other, students, parents, high school peer tutors and the supervisors to teach students to become academically successful and to provide caring friendship and support. Spanish language skills are not at all necessary but are a plus, as are proficiency in advanced math, english/writing, and the sciences.
Time Requirements
PULSE students must work with the After School Program with elementary school students, as well as with one of the four youth leadership programs of their choices. Their time requirement will be fulfilled by committing to two separate afternoons (2:30 to 5:30 with the elementary school students and 2:00 to 6:00 with the teen leadership program). PULSE students will also be required to participate in community activities/events related to the youth leadership programs they choose to participate in.
Supervision
PULSE students are accountable to the two Directors of the respective programs, afternoon and evening, who will provide orientation and consultation.
