PULSE Program

Roxbury Youth Programs

Nature and Purpose
Roxbury Youth Programs is run under the broader Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry—one of the oldest faith-based social service organizations in the country. The UU Urban Ministry embraces a philosophy of direct engagement to empower Boston's disadvantaged residents; it is part of the Urban Ministry's work to bring people together across differences of ethnicity, culture, and socioeconomic background to learn from one another and work toward common goals. Based in a belief in social justice and respect for the dignity of every individual, all Urban Ministry programs are nonsectarian.

The Roxbury Youth Program is an after-school program focused on academic achievement and character development. We strive to provide a safe environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and their perceived boundaries and limitation. During their time at program, students will receive academic support and enjoy an “evening enrichment curriculum” focusing on positive self image.

Tasks
Tasks for PULSE students in the after-school programs can include tutoring, conducting workshops, and creating fun educational programs.
Tutors: Assist individual students with homework in subjects such as writing/reading, math, science, social studies, and foreign languages. PULSE volunteers can also exercise leadership by developing and conducting fun, educational activities during the program day for middle and high school youth.
Enrichment: Assist or design projects in writing, video, theater, movement, hobbies, oration, and debate.  PULSE volunteers exercise leadership in other areas by assisting the youth in selecting colleges to apply to, filling out applications, applying for financial aid, and tutoring for the SAT exams. Six (6) volunteers are needed.

Time Requirements
The after-school program operates Monday-Thursday, except for holidays during the school year. The after-school program offers the following shifts; 2pm-6pm or 3:30pm-7:30pm with workshop facilitation from 6:30pm-7:30pm. The program consists of tutoring from 2pm-6pm, dinner from 6pm-6:30pm, and an evening workshop from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
