Educational Development Group, Inc.
Nature and Purpose
The Educational Development Group, Inc. (EDG) is an organization with a mission to prepare new immigrant families with the language and cultural skills needed to access education and employment opportunities. We seek to help newly arrived immigrants realize their American dreams.
Without English language knowledge, immigrants are pushed into entry-level jobs for which they are overqualified. An innovative program like our intensive 10-week program, provides a unique opportunity to bring social change, because it allows this otherwise marginalized population to achieve their full potential. Our graduating students can begin jobs in the United States or continue their education. In the previous class, two of our Peruvian students went on to receive a higher education at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. One student got a job as a prep cook at the Park Plaza Hotel with ambition to become a chef. Another student accepted a position as a nurse’s assistant at Newton Wellesley, her goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
With the help of volunteers, more immigrants can reach results similar to those mentioned above. PULSE students enable immigrant students to maximize their capabilities and build a solid foundation for long-term independence and participation in the fabric of their communities. PULSE students help immigrants break language barriers through engaging students in casual conversations using English. This is rewarding for all because conversations about styles, songs, movie stars, as well as current events, culture, and differing values allow both sides to appreciate the diversity which is so valued in our country. PULSE students also help to supplement classroom instruction by tutoring one-on-one with students, assisting them with homework, and leading group activities such as educational games. Those involved in the PULSE program help students fill out job applications and aid students with mock interviews, as well as, assisting those students pursuing higher education with the college application process. Moreover, PULSE students can offer new networking ideas, job leads, and motivate newly arrived immigrants to participate in community events. Most recently, one of the mentors told the students about free salsa dances at Harvard and MIT.
