Academic Interests: Mary’s main research interest focuses on the cultural component of emotion development and how the social environment—including the presence or absence of war and conflict—affects children’s perception of emotion and the breadth of their emotion categories. She is specifically interested in how Palestinian children living in the West Bank and Israel versus American children understand emotion (particularly fear)—its causes, consequences, and associated facial expressions. How do young Palestinian and American children initially understand fear (e.g., in terms of reality-based themes or fantasy-based themes?) and how does this understanding develop during and subsequent to the preschool years?
