Dennis Hale did his undergraduate work at Oberlin College and his doctoral work at the City University of New York Graduate Center, where he received his Ph.D. in 1977. He has taught at Boston College since 1978, where he was the Department Chair for eight years. His teaching and research have taken a number of directions over the years, and he has published essays on local government, American political thought, public administration, and the modern experience of citizenship. He has edited (with Marc Landy) two volumes of essays by the French political scientist Bertrand de Jouvenel, and is completing a book on Democracy and the Jury System. His essays and reviews have appeared in the Political Science Quarterly, PS, Society, The Journal of Politics, APSR, State and Local Government Review, Polity, Administration and Society, The Political Science Reviewer, The Washington Post, and Newsday.
