Graduate Program

The Department of Physics at Boston College has a selective graduate program which offers a comprehensive course of study and research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), as well as programs leading to a Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.) in conjunction with the School of Education. Courses emphasize a strong foundation in the basic principles of physics, preparing the student to undertake advanced research under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

Graduate Program in Physics

The Ph.D. program in the Physics Department comprises an active group of about 50 graduate students, typically with 8-12 incoming students each year. We have approximately 20 faculty members. The PhD. program in Physics is focused on research in the areas of materials, optics and nano science. We have strengths in both experimental and theoretical aspects and work on the forefront materials science, with numerous opportunities to collaborate with faculty in other departments. Visiting The BC Physics Department

Promising prospective students are often invited to visit the physics department during February or March. Please contact Professor Rein Uritam, director of the graduate program for further details.

Financial Assistance

Graduate students typically receive financial support in the form of teaching assistantships and research assistantships, as well as tuition remission, which covers the full cost of tuition. Incoming graduate students are typically appointed as teaching assistants for the first year of the program with a stipend of approximately $26,000 annually. Highly qualified students in the first year may be nominated for a Dean's Fellowship from the graduate school, which includes an enhanced stipend.

After the first year, students are expected to join a research group and receive research assistantships, which also include full tuition remission, health insurance, and a similar stipend as the teaching assistants.
