Chair and Professor, Department of Physics - Boston College

The Department of Physics at Boston College seeks a dynamic and creative leader for the position of Department Chair. The position will be at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and build upon the Department's core strengths in condensed matter and materials physics, and physics at the interface with other sciences and engineering, while maintaining her or his own distinguished and internationally-recognized scholarly research. Boston College Physics faculty presently includes 17 tenure-track and research faculty and a graduate program with more than 40 Ph.D. students. The Department is expected to grow in the coming years, and the Chair will oversee the recruitment of several additional faculty members. Boston College has been investing heavily in its science programs for the last 2 decades, and the university is poised to launch a major interdisciplinary and applied science initiative, through a new Institute for Integrated Science and Society. As such, the Department seeks candidates possessing excellent communication skills, interdisciplinary vision, and ambition, who will play a leading role in the Department’s contribution to that initiative. Working with departmental committees, the Department Chair oversees the educational mission of the Department, including the integration of teaching and research activities, as well as the graduate program.
