Departmental Honors in Mathematics

The Department offers to qualified Mathematics majors the opportunity to graduate with Departmental Honors. Students considering graduate school in Mathematics would especially benefit from completing this program.
The requirements for departmental honors in Mathematics vary, depending on your entrance date:
Students entering September 2010 and beyond
Departmental Honors are awarded to mathematics majors who complete a minimum of 21 mathematics credits for MT 312, MT 322, and/or courses at the 400 level or above (18 of which are already prescribed by the requirements for the regular mathematics major), and who include in their major program:
- Completion of MT 695 Honors Seminar (normally offered in Spring semester), or substitution of an approved MT 499 Readings and Research course;
- Completion of two graduate-level classes (numbered MT 500 or above);
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 must be achieved in MT courses numbered 300 or above.
Students entering prior to September 2010
Departmental Honors are awarded to mathematics majors who complete a minimum of 12 courses: the five required courses (or approved substitutes) and seven mathematics courses from the set including MT 312, MT 322, and/or courses at the 400 level or above (six of which are already prescribed by the requirements for the regular mathematics major); and who include in their major program:
- Completion of MT 695 Honors Seminar (normally offered in Spring semester), or substitution of an approved MT 499 Readings and Research course;
- Completion of two graduate-level classes (numbered MT 500 or above);
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 must be achieved in MT courses numbered 300 or above.
Each student's honors program must be approved by the Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Programs. Students interested in Departmental Honors must plan carefully, beginning even prior to the start of junior year, to be sure that all requirements can be met in a reasonable fashion.
