Students may earn an interdisciplinary minor in Latin American Studies by completing a total of six approved courses drawn from at least three different academic departments. In addition to the six courses, the minor also requires proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese equivalent to three years of college-level language study. Students seeking to earn a minor in Latin American Studies must submit a proposed plan of study to the Director of the program, listing the courses that will be taken to fulfill the requirements. All programs of study must be approved by the Director, who will advise students about the selection of appropriate introductory and capstone courses as well as about opportunities for studying in Latin America.
In general, proposed plans of study for the minor should be submitted no later than the second semester of the sophomore year. This allows students to take advantage of the special events to which students in the minor are invited, as well as to plan appropriately their courses of study both at Boston College and/or abroad. The Director will review the proposed plan of study, in consultation with the student and other faculty in the program. If the proposed plan is accepted, the Director will grant approval for the student to declare a Latin American Studies minor. This list is subject to change based on course offerings in a given year from the various departments participating in the program. Applicants can fill out and submit the Latin American Studies Plan-of-Study Form on-line.
