Books 1 and 2 (©1997 The McGraw-Hill Companies); features at least one episode of each chapter's ongoing story line about the lives of Jim, an American student in Russia, and his Russian friends; Nachalo Instructor's Manual contains the text of songs included in the video; 2 copies available; approximately 68 minutes (total time).

Russian Ark
Region 1 (NTSC) DVD; Directed by Alexander Sokurov and filmed (2002) in a single take, Russian Ark follows the wanderings of a mysterious narrator who wakes up from an accident and finds himself outside the Hermitage during the 18th century. There he meets a French marquis, and together they travel through the Winter Palace of the Tsars and 300 years of Russian history. Throughout the journey they discuss art, people, and the splendor and shortcomings of Russia while spying on various historical figures; special features = documentaries "In One Breath — The Making of Russian Ark" and "Mon Paradis — The Winter Palace," producer's commentary, interviews with filmmakers, filmographies, web links; in Russian with the option of English or French subtitles; 96 minutes.
