Boston College’s Islamic Civilization and Societies program is pleased to announce that in mid-August we were informed by the US Department of Education that we have been awarded a two-year matching Title VI grant. Only 30 such grants were awarded in support of undergraduate programs this year in the country, and of these only two or three covered the Middle East and the Islamic world.
The principal objectives for this grant include:
- Expansion of the Arabic language program and the addition of Turkish and Persian. For more information please contact our language coordinator Professor Mariela Dakova.
- Curriculum development, particularly with the addition of new Cornerstone Freshman Seminars, summer-study abroad courses, and a Senior Thesis Seminar.
- Support for our Distinguished Lecture Series. Click here fore future events in our series.
- Research and Study Abroad grants for undergraduate students.
- Faculty Travel and Research Grants
The flexible nature of the funds allocated by this grant will allow students and faculty to work together to strengthen and broaden the ICS program. We are excited for the expanded opportunities that this grant will provide to students whether at Boston College or abroad. By enriching our program we hope to enliven students’ understanding of this vital region not only to understand the past but indeed to shape the future.
Questions and suggestions should be directed to Professor Kathleen Bailey.
