Ely Janis

This course will survey major political, social, economic, and cultural changes in Europe, the Americas, and the world in the 19th and 20th centuries. We will begin with the legacy of the French Revolution and early 19th century intellectual and social responses to the emerging nation-state and industrialization.  We will then examine the effects of imperialism and interactions between the East and the West.  We will also examine the origins and effects of the two world wars, the Russian revolution, decolonization, and the Cold war.  We will conclude with an examination of the post-Cold War era, analyzing the rising influence of India, China, and the Middle East in world affairs.
