This course examines the creation of political, social, economic, and cultural ideologies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We begin by discussing the legacies of the Enlightenment and the response of philosophers to industrialization and the emerging nation-state. We will then examine the rise of imperialism and the encounters between West and East. We will explore the causes and effects of the two world wars, the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, and Decolonization. We will conclude with analyses of world affairs since the end of the Cold War and the growing influence of the Middle East, India, and China.
