This is a course in modern European history beginning in the late-eighteenth century with the rise of Napoleon and ending with the collapse of a bi-polar world in 1989. It will not only introduce you to the events of the past, but also to the practice of history, which is the analysis of change over time. We will be exploring the past from the perspective of intellectual and cultural history, which means that our focus will be on the ideas and values of the past. Specifically, this course is structured around the search for order following the upheavals of the French and Industrial Revolutions.
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 12:00
