HS-082-02 Modern History II

spring semester

Greg Walsh

This course will examine the profound political, social, and cultural turmoil that engulfed the world as the ideas of the French Revolution and Industrial Revolution spread throughout the nineteenth century.  It will illustrate how democracy and capitalism came to the forefront of European and American society despite resistance from conservatives.  It will also examine alternative ideologies such as communism and fascism that emerged in the twentieth century when democracy and capitalism appeared to have failed.  The course will conclude with an examination how well the contemporary world has lived up to Enlightenment ideals and the problems that come from failure to do so.
