This course is a continuation of HS059 and will examine the making of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from the perspective of the Islamic world. Topics to be covered include Islamic modernism in the nineteenth century, pan-Islamism, the partition of the Indian subcontinent, the politics of oil and Osama bin Laden and 9/11, alongside the usual landmarks of global history in this period such as European imperialism, Communism, World Wars I and II and the Cold War.
