HS-094-03 Modern History II

fall semester

Jason Cavallari

This course explores the development of Western (and, to a limited degree, non-Western) culture from the French Revolution to the Collapse of the Soviet Union and the advent of postmodernism.  Major themes will be the role of the individual versus the role of society, the exploration of non-traditional “texts” in explaining historical change, and cultural responses to social trauma.  Through a broad use of standard historical narrative, art, music, and written texts, students in this course will find a new appreciation not only for historical issues, but also for the important role that “culture” plays in one’s view of history.
